The city of Red Deer has created an option for those families looking to hand out something healthier than candy this Halloween.

‘Boo Booklets’ are $20 and contain 10 passes to any of the city’s recreation centres. They can be purchased at any of the locations from the cashiers.

Sales have already begun and will continue on until the end of October.

Barb Mckee is the Recreation Superintendent with the city and she says it’s not about replacing candy, but giving other options.

“It’s not meant to take place of all the candy that goes around but just knowing that there could be some homeowners in Red Deer that could be searching for a healthier option.”

She says that it also makes for a handy option for kids that may have allergies or sensitivities to typical Halloween candies.

“We know kids will always want to trick or treat at the door and candy is certainly an expectation but this just gives a little option for something different and we were excited to provide access to recreation facilities.”

The Teal Pumpkin Project is also going viral in Canada this year. Houses that have a teal pumpkin on their doorstep will have non-food items for those kids that can’t accept traditional candies, making the Boo Booklets an option for participating residents.
