Red Deer City council will be debating the city’s new transportation plan on Monday.

Moving Red Deer Forward is the foundation for how the transportation network will be improved today, tomorrow and in the future.

Whether you drive, walk, cycle or take transit, Director of Planning Services, Tara Lodewyk, said the program will allow them to discover ways to improve all forms of transportation.

“We’re taking vision statements and putting them into measurable criteria to create appealing options for various modes of transportation in our city.”

To help with the research, the City of Red Deer developed a new tool called the Multimodal Transportation Index, which enables them to measure and evaluate the walking, cycling and transit experience.

“What it does, it measures what quality means for each of the different modes. As an example, if you’re a vehicle, what’s important is the trip time and having unimpeded movement along the road. It actually has measures behind it where we can take data that we have collected and apply those criteria’s to it.”

She adds the multimodal transportation plan is going to provide Red Deerians with a balance transportation network that provides choice for residents and not about making all modes equal on all routes.
