Red Deer College announced Wednesday morning that the school will start offering its second degree program in September 2019.

That program will be a four-year Bachelor of Applied Arts in film, theatre and live entertainment — provided through the School of Creative Arts.

Students would get to choose one of three majors: acting, film production or live entertainment production.

“There is some crossover between those majors as well. There’s some interdisciplinary opportunities,” said Jason Frizzell, Dean of School of Creative Arts.

“If we produce an actor, they will understand how to act on stage, how to act in front of a camera. If there’s voiceover work with animated features, they’ll be able to do that. They’ll be comfortable working in a green screen or motion capture environment where there aren’t any other actors, you’re working in a digital environment. Those are the types of skills we want our students to have.”

In the fourth year of the program, students will participate in a work-study.

The school will start taking applications next week. Seventy-five students are expected to enroll during the first cohort.
