There's some interest from a few new ultra-low cost carriers in the Red Deer Airport.

Airport CEO Graham Ingham delivered a business plan update to Red Deer City Council last night.

Those airlines include Enerjet, and Canada Jetlines, Ingham is not counting out Swoop, but says he's had no formal discussions with the WestJet owned carrier which is to start flying this summer.

Canada Jetlines has included Red Deer on its 2019/2020 route map ; Ingham explains the potential for flights and destinations.

“Initial projects were based around 3 flights per week, destinations probably Abbotsford, Hamilton, Kitchener, those types of flights, and then maybe in the 2nd year you’re looking at 7 flights per week and then in the 3rd year you’re up to 14 flights per week”.

Ingham stresses the airport has no done deals but he feels ultra-low cost carriers present the best opportunity for the Red Deer Airport in the short term.

In terms of what the airport would need to support these air carriers, Ingham says they would have to make a few improvements.

“Small expansion on the terminal as well as the apron and then a small expansion on our parking lot as well.  All and all, not a significant amount of work required”.

He estimates the cost of those upgrades to be about 5 million which the airport would finance instead of approaching the City and County for funds.

Air Canada is the only airline offering scheduled passenger service at the Red Deer Airport right now.
