With powerful opioids making the headline almost daily, whether they be drug busts or overdoses, it's important to remember those who have battled addiction, and are winning.

Red Deer's Recovery Day group will be holding their 4th annual Recovery Day on September 9th Red Deer City Hall Park, which is an open community event to celebrate recovery from addictions, as well as provide important information for those affected by addiction.

Volunteer with Red Deer Recovery Day Kerstyn VanSandick says what the goal of this day is.

“So those who are in fear of reaching out to get help, we no longer want them to be ashamed. We want to develop a community that not only welcomes, but encourages people to step up and ask for this help, because recovery saves lives. We want to create this community where a road to recovery is celebrated, it’s supported, and it’s a lot more achievable.”

In order to help raise awareness of this day, there will be a public screen of the movie, The Anonymous People, right here at the Lacombe City Cinema tomorrow at 10am.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

VanSandick says the documentary’s goal is end the stigma that surrounds asking for help when it comes to addictions.

“It’s a feature documentary film, about the 23.5 million Americans living in long term recovery from addictions, alcohol and other drugs. These deeply entrenched societal stigma, and discrimination, have kept recovering voices silent, and faces hidden for decades. And finally, shift problematic policy to long-lasting recovery solutions.”
