The Chinooks Edge School Division has finalized their capital plan this week, sending in their wish list into the province before their budget comes down this spring.

Superintendent Kurt Sacher says their schools in Sylvan Lake are high on their priority list.

“The high school is a big priority, just wanting some addition spaces there, we do have a new elementary school in Sylvan Lake and as those populations make their way through the system, we definitely need to be prepared at the high school end.”

Sacher says they are really excited about the possibility for Jessie Duncan School in Penhold, currently a pre-kindergarten to grade 2 school, which they’ll be expanding regardless of the provincial budget by adding modular classrooms and hallways extensions, meaning they'll be able to house significantly more students.

“It’ll essentially expand to be a pre-k to grade 3 which is a much better configuration for us from a number of perspectives. That in turn takes the pressure off Penhold Elementary School a little bit, which can be a grade 4-6 school. And the grade 6’s then obviously move out of Penhold Crossing Secondary school and it becomes a grade 7-12 for the start of next year.”

An expansion for Carstairs elementary is also high on their needs list, as well as a new elementary school in Olds.
