Construction has begun on a new playground at the Co-op Subdivision in Ponoka.

After the old playground equipment was removed from the site last fall, due to troubles with the initial contractor, the installation of new equipment only started yesterday.

Director of Community Services for the Town Wes Amendt explains what residents can expect.

“We’ve got duel-based swings with infant seats and belt seats so there’ll be four swings there. Another feature we are working on, for the two to five year olds, is a climbing structure with a couple of slides, and we’ve a got a larger climbing structure for five to twelve year olds.”

The Town is asking for volunteers to help finish the playground starting at noon today, with the hopes of completing the project.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring sledge hammers, shovels and wheelbarrows.

Amendt said he is confident they’ll have a good turnout.

“Finding volunteers for any of our activities (is usually a sure thing), we got Ponoka Day in the Park coming up on Friday and again there is a call for volunteers and there’s no shortage of people calling the office and saying I’m available and what do you need me to do?”

“We have a great community.”

Once the playground is complete, the Town will start renovations on the playground at Westview Park.
