The Town of Ponoka announced yesterday that the Hamilton Skate Park is now closed for the remainder of the season, following a number of complaints from the public about people violating COVID-19 restrictions on people gathering in public places.

The time closed before the cold weather hits will also allow Town crews to repair the extensive damage that has been done to the site.

Repairs include:

  • Removing graffiti and profanity spray-painted throughout the facility;
  • Repairing fencing that has been damaged by individuals trying to gain access to the locked facility after hours;
  • Filling holes that have been dug around the outer edges of the Skate Park;
  • Replacing damaged and stolen signage; and
  • Replacing damaged garbage receptacles.

“There has been a general lack of respect for the site by facility users,” said Andrew Jones, Town of Ponoka Recreation Coordinator. “Warnings have been given throughout the summer but that didn’t resolve the ongoing problems,” he said.

Once the repairs are complete, the Town will figure out to prevent stuff like this from happening in the future before it reopens next year. Jones says closing the park again will absolutely be considered as they consult with Ponoka RCMP and their Bylaw Enforcement Officer on how to best maintain the site.

“If we see similar behaviour next year, we will have to consider closing the facility again,” said Jones.
