After the installation of a new ice plant, the arena in Ponoka is now ready for skating.

The large and small indoor surfaces at the Ponoka Arena Complex will be ready for private bookings beginning on September 5.

The annual free public skating schedule will run from September 7 - 10 with extended hours from 4 – 9 p.m. on the small ice.

After that, the free public skating schedule will be:

  • Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the large and small ice
  • Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 2:30 p.m. on the small ice

Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town of Ponoka is happy to have the public back on the ice. “Construction of our new ice plant at the Arena has gone well and we are excited to reopen and welcome the public back to our facility. Ice making is currently underway and we’ve been working closely with our Arena user groups as we prepare for the reopening of the facility,”

He notes the new ice plant provides increased efficiency that will allow the Arena to expand its regular ice season and potentially offer summer training camps in Ponoka in the future. While the new ice plant was being installed, the Arena underwent additional annual maintenance improvements and repairs, including:

  • Plexiglass replacement around the ice surfaces;
  • Painting beams above the ice;
  • Board repairs;
  • Board advertising touch ups and replacements; and concrete slab repairs.
