Construction on a new shopping Centre in Blackfalds could be coming sooner than expected.

The Blackfalds Crossing Development would be built South of the Coop Gas Bar and North of the roundabout, bringing both commercial and residential properties.

The only thing holding up the project was accessibility to the lot.

But with construction on a new intersection expected to begin this spring, Elkay Lands Developer Rick Friesen says you could see construction on the shopping centre begin spring 2018.

He also previewed what may be coming to the area.

"Typically what happens is that you'd find an anchor for a shopping centre. A food anchored shopping centre is pretty typical. Once you have that anchor then the banks, nail bars, and various businesses comfortable moving in around that food mart will fall into place."

Friesen says their lot is the perfect location for a shopping centre.

"All you have to do is drive on Highway 2A, come across the roundabout, and you see pretty clearly that it's an exceptional location for a food anchored shopping spot. From there you don't have to go far up the road to get to All-Star Park. It's a tremendous community with the Abbey Centre, and the dog park, and the arena. Blackfalds Crossing will be pretty central to all of it."

After building the shopping centre, Friesen says they'll start to develop the residential lots for people to eventually move in to.
