In light of a high-tech, high-danger society, a new Red Deer College app should help make people feel a little safer while attending the campus.

The new RDC Safe app makes it easier for anyone on the property to get help in emergency situations or find access to any help for their safety that they may need.

Manager of Security and Emergency Responses Dan Sarrasin says in emergency situations, users would be updated in real-time.

“The good thing about the app is that it sends push notifications,” Sarrasin explains, “if you think about a sporting app where your team gets a goal and you get a notification within one and a half seconds, it’s the same within this app.”

The app will be of comfort to visitors, students, staff, residents and really anyone who needs help while on campus.

“We can send out alerts if there’s a flood or a boil water advisory, you know we can push it out to everybody’s phone or users can see it when they log in based on the emergency.”

This type of technology is becoming more popular with crime rates seemingly never decreasing. Sarrasin says it’s something that everyone can use to feel a little more secure on campus.

“It’s more about keeping everybody informed on what to do.”

The application also allows people to have a security guard escort them back to their vehicles or residences if they live on the property, as well as receiving assistance if they become injured.
