Often we're quick to point out bad behaviour or poor decisions young people make, but a new program in Sylvan Lake is looking to celebrate the opposite.

Youth Services in Sylvan and the RCMP are working to together to launch the Positive Ticket Program where kids will be celebrated for doing awesome things and making positive choices.

FCSS Youth Services Supervisor Krista Carlson says building kids up goes a long way.

“Just really showcasing the good stuff that kids are doing, and helping to build all of those positive things in them.  Building that rapport between RCMP and youth in that they are not scary criminal hunters, just people who are wanting to get to know you”.

Carlson explains the execution of the program.

“We will actually have physical tickets that will be printed up and the RCMP Officers will be armed with those tickets and they will be out looking for the good stuff that kids are doing, wearing their helmet when they are riding their bike or scootering or skateboarding, helping a friend, mentoring a younger youth, using a crosswalk or volunteering at an event”.

They are hoping to distribute about 2,000 positive tickets this year.

The positive ticket, in addition to a social media campaign, also makes the kids eligible for some prizes at the Flipside Youth Centre.
