An investigation that began in January in collaboration with 11 partnering RCMP detachment has brought a stop to an organized firearms straw trafficking operation.

The investigation was launched by Blackfalds RCMP after receiving intelligence about the possibility of trafficking. Extensive evidence was gathered including the engagement of firearms partners.

Three suspects were identified and targeted in the ongoing investigation. Search warrants were conducted in Red Deer and Blackfalds on February 12, 2021. During the warrant, a loaded Glock .22 pistol was located with the three adults and 10 firearms and ammunition were seized from the residences. Some firearms were loaded while others had tampered serial numbers.

Through further investigation, it was determined that more firearms may be located at a Calgary business.

39-year-old David Masyk, 48-year-old Jason Lafferty, and 29-year-old Jennifer McCagherty were charged with charges related to firearms, trafficking, and other related offences. Lafferty was remanded into custody until February 17, 2021. Masyk and McCagherty were both released and are set to appear in Red Deer Provincial court on March 17, 2021.
