Hoping to use his increased exposure to shine the light on LGBTQ issues, a Vancouver man with ties to central Alberta is hoping to become the face of the gay community, as he is getting set to compete at the Mr. Gay World competition in South Africa in April.

Josh Rimer was born in Lethbridge and lived in Red Deer from the ages of 2 until 18, when he moved out to Vancouver, and became involved in a number of local charities that focus on members of the LGBTQ community.

Because of his constant involvement in the gay community, Rimer was chosen as Mr. Gay Canada, and he is excited to be able to bring more attention to the charities that are near and dear to him.

“I think a great thing with being Mr. Gay Canada is a lot of people pay attention. I get a lot more media exposure and then I can bring these charitable organizations that I work with to light.”

This will be his second time participating in the competition. He says it’s more than just a swimsuit and skills competition.

“It also looks at somebody who contributes to the community, who they feel is inspiring and charismatic, but it also says somebody who takes care of their body, dresses well. So it’s sort of like a very rounded gay individual.”

Rimer also hosts and produces a show for OUTtv, Canada's national LGBTQ station, where he showcased gay-friendly destinations.

He has volunteered with a number of Vancouver based charities over the years, including the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, A Loving Spoonful, AIDS Vancouver, the LOUD Foundation, and Foundation of Hope.

His adventures are also covered on his YouTube channel which has over 33 thousand subscribers, who can now watch Rimer on his journey to the Mr. Gay World competition.
