On the heels of 3 days of intensive public engagement sessions in Sylvan Lake, looking to residents to help guide future development plans for the waterfront, some good news when it comes to funding the process.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities announced a $100,000 grant for the project this week.
Feedback obtained through the Town's Reimagine Sylvan Lake process will help create an updated Waterfront Area Redevelopment Plan, the current plan dates back 12 years.
Mayor Sean McIntyre is enthused by the public participation in “Reimagine Sylvan” to date.
“We had a highly engaged group in, there was a lot of opportunities for people to come in and see the ideas that have been put forward and working on what can work together to make the downtown an inviting, welcoming, sustainable, successful area. So the results of those workshops will be presented at another open house on June 14th, right before 1913 Days”.
McIntyre admits it’s an extensive process, from start to finish it’s a $200,000 project.
“Planning is one point of this project and implementation is another. So as we start to get a better picture of what our residents are looking for in that area, what kind of thing will be attractive to our residents as well as people who want to set up businesses here, then we get to start to work on implementation. This entire time we’ve been working with land use planners and community planners, just to make sure our plans are coherent and are able to be applied”.
All said and done, it creates a vision for the area that spans from the golf course in the town’s west end, across to the roundabout at the entrance to town, including the newly acquired old water slide site and the pier and provincial park area that the province turned over to the town.
