Two schools in the Wolf Creek Public School Division experiencing growth pressures will see modular classrooms added for the next school year in hopes of providing some relief to the current space crunch.

Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe will see 2 new modular classrooms arrive this fall.

Superintendent of Schools Jayson Lovell explains the space crunch at the school “specifically understanding that school is close to 100% capacity currently. We are thankful we can expand with portables and in doing so maintaining that pre-Kindergarten to Grade 7, grade configuration at that school. Down the road though as we know Lacombe will grow specifically on that north end, we need to anticipate that growth and also be prepared to expand”.

Terrace Ridge currently has about 340 students enrolled.

In Blackfalds meantime, despite the opening of the brand new Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus, the school sector as a whole continues to feel the pinch of exponential growth in the community, particularly at the Iron Ridge Elementary Campus.

Lovell says the province has also approved 2 modular classrooms to be added there this fall after they were forced to get creative to accommodate current student numbers “we internally converted two change rooms into classroom space this year to deal with some of the short term space needs. We also have a number of classrooms that are doubled up, so we have two classes in one space, they are large classrooms so we can accommodate it, but still it’s not ideal to have two classes having to share the same space”.

Lovell says the Elementary Campus already operates with modulars that were added roughly 3 years ago.
