With a population of just under 500 people, the Hamlet of Mirror is hoping to receive funding from Lacombe County for a community enhancement project.

Molly Hanson-Nagel, Chair of the Mirror Community Network, said the hamlet is looking to replace old playground structures that have been there forever.

“What we’re looking at doing is replacing those structures with new playground equipment, removing some of the ones such as the teeter- totters and putting in fitness equipment for adults and youth to use,” Hanson-Nagel said.

“We’re also looking at shade structures that will help with UV’s, seating areas, planting some garden spaces, fruit trees and shade trees.”

Last March, Mirror was chosen as one of 19 communities across the province to take part in an Alberta Health Services pilot project.

The Comprehensive Community Cancer Prevention Project was aimed to enhance supportive environments that increase healthy choices.

The assessment was completed the following June and looked at different areas of the community including physical activity, nutrition, UV and leadership.

Because of the assessment, the hamlet chose to focus on community inclusion that would include physical activity, UV protection and aspects of healthy eating.

The new space will be a place for families, children, youth, adults and seniors to gather and Hanson-Nagel is hoping it will help promote the community of Mirror to its residents and visitors.

The Mirror Community Network requested $68,250 from council yesterday, out of the projects estimated $110,150 price tag.

They’re also asking for an additional $7,000 to help with the installation of the new equipment.

Hanson-Nagel added if they do receive the requested funding, they're hoping to break ground this summer and have the project completed by fall.
