Hoping to continue to fly the NDP flag in the riding of Red Deer North, incumbent MLA Kim Schreiner says when it comes to her parties accomplishments, their track record over the last 4 years speaks for itself.

Schreiner has held a number of Committee positions, including deputy chair of the Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund and the Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future.

What policies are you looking to really stress during this election?

“As far as policies, there’s a lot of things that are important to Red Deerians and central Albertans…health care, good quality health care for all Albertans, and making sure that we have good quality education for all of our students, and that we take care of our seniors in a time in their life when they need it, such as long term care bed spaces. “

What is something you are most proud of about your party?

“There’s so many things that we brought forward that I know Red Deerians have been asking for, for decades. Projects such as our Red Deer airport expansion, our Red Deer courthouse, our wastewater project, the Gaetz Avenue interchange, Red Deer College becoming a University.

I’m so very proud when [Education] Minister Eggen announcing the 244 new schools and re-modernization across our province. That’s something I’m extremely proud of that our government actually brought those project to fruition, it’s something Albertans have been asking for for a very long time, and we made it happen for them.”

What do you think is most important to Central Albertans about your platform?

“Some of the things that I think are really important, include the $25 a day daycare. I know that Red Deer has a couple of daycares that have already been using the $25 a day daycares, and I know Rachel just announced they are expanding 13,000 more spaces, the parents were really thrilled about that…our phones never stopped ringing at the campaign office, we were getting thank-you’s, we talked to one gentleman who had seven children and he said he was so very grateful, we had single moms were calling us saying this is allowing them to get out and work, get back into the work force quicker, and were so very excited about that announcement.

Another thing just announced was a stronger public health care for Albertans. More surgeries and shorter wait times, so it’s something that I’ve very very excited about. “

What is your area of expertise in your party?

“Coming from health care and working with seniors that’s predominantly where my heart goes out to. So I know that, for example, our Red Deer Regional Hospital is something that Red Deer and central Albertans have been asking for, for decades, and I was so very pleased when Rachel Notley put the money forward in just the last budget for the needs assessment and the business plan which brought our Red Deer Regional Hospital and Cardiac Catheterization Lab one step closer to fruition, and I know that she dropped the writ and the day after she was back in Red Deer because she’s so excited with that announcement.

And of course I’ve worked with seniors for many many years, and they are very near and dear to my heart, and I was so very impressed that our government promised 2,000 long term care beds in our 4 years, which we committed to, and those beds have been built, and now we have expanded that number to another 2,000 and I’m very proud of that. Of course we want to keep our seniors close to home, we know that they do better when they are near their loved ones, and we want to keep them in the community they helped build.”

What is your attachment to Central Alberta?

“My parents were both in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and we lived all over Canada and the States, and as a young adult I really didn’t know where home was because it was always on the air force base we were living at. So I was going to school in Edmonton and I came to Red Deer almost 40 years, I came to Red Deer for a weekend and absolutely fell in love with this community. I knew that this is where I wanted to raise my family, and its been my community for almost 40 years, so it is my community.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

“I just want to say that I’m so proud of our government for the last 4 years, for fulfilling all the commitments they made. I’m so proud of our Red Deer airport expansion, the Red Deer courthouse, I love driving by and seeing the work that’s being done there I can’t wait until it’s open. When Minister [Brian] Mason came here just a few weeks ago talking about the wastewater project, about bringing safe drinking water to Red Der and surrounding communities, that’s so important to me.

The Gaetz Avenue interchange, that was a huge huge project that central Albertans have been asking for, for a long time, it was all about safety, so I’m really really proud of our government for that. And for the Red Deer College University status which allows more Red Deerians to be able to access post-secondary, I’m very proud of that. And of course, number one is the commitment from Rachel for the Red Deer Regional Hospital Expansion and Cardiac Cath lab, that is huge in our area, I hear it at all the doors, people so very proud of that.”
