Leader of the Freedom Conservative Party and MLA for Chestermere-Strathmore, Derek Fildebrandt became the leader of the FCP after deciding not to run for leadership in the newly formed UCP leadership election in 2017, eventually leaving that party to sit as an independent, and then joining the FCP the following year.

Winning the permanent leadership role for his party in October of 2018, Fildebrandt said that his party was truly a grassroots party and “would not adhere to backroom political games”.

He has served as the Alberta Director as well as the National Research Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and was a vocal critic of the Redford government’s deficit budgets and the way taxpayers money was being handled. He is also the former Wildrose Shadow Minister of Finance and Treasury Board.
