With Lacombe schools back in session this morning, the Lacombe Police Service is reminding everyone to be extra cautious on the road, whether it’s driving your car, your bike or walking.

School zones, which are in effect on school days only, regulate a speed limit of 30 km/h from 8-9:30 a.m., 11:30-1:30 p.m., and 3-4:30 p.m.

However, School Resource Officer and Constable Jeff Hewitt said it’s not just school zones where people need to be careful.

“All kids don’t live in school zones and have got houses outside of it. Make sure you are doing the right speed in the school zones, but even once you get on the outside.”

“As a driver, just make sure you watch out, there will be kids coming in, they could be biking or walking.”

Hewitt adds, expect the unexpected.

“Some of them are excited to go back, so they don’t necessarily look before they cross the road. They might jet out in front of a vehicle or during the summer some people don’t maintain their speeds in the school zones and might drive a little quicker.”

“Just remember during daylight hours to drive 30km/h in school zones.”

Hewitt said although bikes are not usually permitted on the sidewalks, they do allow students to use them because they believe it’s safer.

LPS is also asking you to respect the many school buses on the road, staying back a safe distance and obeying their flashing lights and safety arm.  Failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights will cost you $543 plus 6 demerit points.
