With the lighthouse in Sylvan Lake a real landmark and community fixture, the town is working to build on that sense of community.

Town Council passed a new Lighthouse Lighting Policy this week for the new lighthouse in Lighthouse Park.

Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet says they can change up the color scheme for a good cause.

“It’s outfitted with LED lights, so similar to what you would see on the CN Tower, or even the High Level Bridge in Edmonton, they are designed to light up in specific colors and now with the policy in place they light up in specific colors to help recognize important causes or events or to just support community spirit within the community”.

There’s an application process, according to Gaudet.

“It must represent a not for profit or community focus, we do need about 3 weeks prior to the requested date, we also ask that they support either a provincial, national or international cause, or local festival or event and staff will review the application and we’ll light up the lighthouse in the colors associated with that cause or event”.
