Construction is set to begin this week on the Main Street Project Downtown.

Stage 1 of a 5 stage project lasting until the end of October will begin this week.

Engineering Services Manager Jordan Thompson says first off 50th Avenue will be closed from Highway 2A to 50th street, and milling crews will start tearing up the roads old asphalt.

"For about 3 days, there will be rolling detours starting on the East end of downtown. They'll be working their way West as that milling crew removes a couple inches of asphalt off of the road surface. Then they'll make sure that it's safe for drivers, and no bumps. We'll make sure that there are ramps over crosswalks, so that it's safe for pedestrians to cross too."

Thompson says painting crews will then come in and make sure the crosswalks are repainted and visible.

"Following that is when the official Stage 1 will start. They'll begin on the East end of 50th avenue, and start removing the rest of the road way to replace the sewer main underneath 50th ave."

Thompson says sidewalks and crosswalks will be open 99% of the time if you're making a trip downtown.

If you're in your vehicle, detour signs will be set up to help you get around.
