It was November 1990 when Brent Sage’s daughter, Brittni, was airlifted by STARS to an Edmonton hospital at nine months old.

Sage, a Lacombe man, says the air ambulance service saved her life that day.

Brittni is now 28 and in each and every year, Sage has bought a ticket in the annual STARS Lottery.

He says he never wins anything. But on Thursday, Sage discovered that a Calgary dream home, valued at $948,000, would be his.

Speaking over the phone, Sage was in disbelief.

“You know somebody wins but you never think it’s going to be you. It’s a blur. It’s like a dream. I’m dizzy, I’m slurring words, I talk too much. I’m dehydrated. It’s just like having three beers for me,” Sage said.

In his time supporting the lottery, Sage says he was never concerned about winning a prize.

“It’s just not a lottery ticket. It’s giving back and knowing my money is going to keep them flying,” he says. “That’s why I’ve never even watched the draws live. I don’t care. If I win, great but if I don’t, I never expected to.”

Sage works at his uncle’s business, Diversified Products, a company that outfits vehicles with specialized accessories, such as those used in law enforcement.

He also happens to be a big Lacombe Generals fan and is planning to put the dream home on sale.

“We’ve got a lot to think about but number one, I guarantee we will not be moving to Calgary. That’s out of the question. Our whole family’s here. We’re Lacombe people.”
