250 Light Armoured Vehicle Monuments are going up across the County, and Lacombe will also be home to a LAV III, paying tribute to Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan and the 158 who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The Lacombe Legion will be hosting a special fundraising kick-off event for the local project which will include the LAV III as the centrepiece in a new Field of Honour as part of the Fairview Cemetery.

Legion Treasurer Calvin Swarbrick says they are hopeful the whole community will get behind the project “there’s quite a bit of money to be raised, we’ve had some donations, the High School kids have raised money for us. It’s not just the Legion doing this, it’s a committee of different people doing this, a committee of people from the City that are all involved, started by the MP Blaine Calkins. We’re hoping this spring to get it here”.

Swarbrick says the project has special meaning for Lacombe as it pays tribute to Master Corporal Byron Greff, the last Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan, who was from Lacombe.

You're invited to join the Legion, our local MLA, MP, Mayor and committee representatives at the Legion fundraising kick-off on Tuesday, February 28th, starting at 11am.
