The City of Lacombe is joining the AUMA's call for changes to how policing is funded in the province.

Council voted to draft a letter to Lacombe-Ponoka MLA Ron Orr, expressing its support for the "everyone should pay" concept, and a funding formula based on population and property assessment.

“I think (small communities) need to realize there’s significant costs with policing and everybody has to pay their fair share,” said Mayor Grant Creasey. “I don’t think that I’m necessarily the person to point out what is fair, all I know is when a certain portion of the public pays nothing, that is not fair.”

Police costs in Alberta are only paid by urban municipalities with populations greater than 5,000, and those with their own forces.

Small communities, as well as municipal districts and counties are exempt.
