The Lacombe Fire Department is sending out a reminder, for the next time you come across a Fire Truck heading to a scene call.

The Department says while they haven't run in to it frequently, they still come across the occasional motorist who isn't aware of the correct rules of the road when they're approached by an emergency vehicle.

Deputy Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere says those rules are to pull over to the side of the road, and come to a complete stop.

"The - and stop - piece in my experience is what most people forget about. And it seems kind of unnecessary I guess, but the reality is that it gives us a clear signal that you're pulling over. We're quite often two, sometimes three vehicles in a line, so pulling over and stopping means you get out of our way once, and all the vehicles can go by you."

Bussiere says he can understand why some people might not realize how important coming to a stop may be, but adds their trucks are much larger than your vehicle.

"What a lot of people don't realize is the stopping distances, the starting distances, the turning radius's, everything in a bigger vehicle is greatly amplified. So we really do need that extra time and space. We're trying to get to an emergency somewhere, so we're usually trying to get there quickly."
If you're out on the roads in Lacombe and come across a vehicle with a flashing green light inside, don't be alarmed.

That's a volunteer firefighter heading to the Lacombe Fire Department to put on his gear, hop in a truck and go extinguish a fire.

Bussiere says you won't be ticketed or in trouble if you don't move over for them, but it would be very helpful.

"That light doesn't allow them to break the rules of the road, but it's just kind of us asking politely for drivers in front of us to move over so we can get to the station a little bit faster. We recognize that it's a privilege for us to use the light, but at the same time it's nice to just raise awareness so people know what they are."
