From the City of Lacombe:

Lacombe City Council is proceeding with the construction of the West Area Servicing project by awarding major construction contracts following a rigorous tendering process.

“Council is pleased to see this project move forward, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on the local and regional economy,” said City of Lacombe Mayor Grant Creasey. “The City of Lacombe is working collaboratively with Lacombe County to ensure that growth and development along our borders is beneficial to both municipalities.”

“These construction contracts are an important first step for the West Area Servicing project, which will ensure continued growth in our region,” said Lacombe County Reeve Paula Law. “This project will have a positive, long-term impact on the local economy for both Lacombe County and the City of Lacombe, and is an example of how rural-urban municipalities can successfully work together.”

“This project will extend water and wastewater utilities to Lacombe’s western boundary, servicing both the upcoming Midway Centre development and future developments in the County,” said Director of Operations and Planning Jordan Thompson.

Due to its significant size, the project was broken into three separate but interconnected construction contracts.

The contracts include the water and wastewater mains, the Midway lift station, and the Highway 12 and 76 Street intersection upgrades.

Council awarded Pidherney’s Inc. the West Area Servicing contract at a cost of $5.6M, the Midway Lift Station contract to Alberco Construction at a cost of $3.7M.

Council then awarded Border Paving the Highway 12 and 76 Street Intersection Improvements contract, including an upgrade of the Highway 12 and 58 Street intersection, at a cost of $3.6M.

Council also directed City administration to extend a contract with Stantec Consulting to continue providing professional services for the 76 Street/Highway 12 and 58 Street/Highway 12 Street intersections projects at a cost of $305K.

The West Area Servicing Project is a jointly funded initiative by the City of Lacombe and Lacombe County.

For the City, the project will immediately facilitate the development of the Midway Center Outline Plan, which includes major commercial, high density residential and trail system development along the QE II corridor.

For Lacombe County, it will lead to the creation of 258 hectares of developable land that can tie-in to City servicing on the west side of QEII.
