Since 2000, the Kraay Family Farm has opened their doors to the public during the summer, offering a family friendly destination filled with fun and games, all while learning about life on the farm.

Every year they create a unique pattern for their corn maze, and this year they plan to honour one of the many special sporting events happening in central Alberta this year, says co-owner Rachel Kraay.

“Every year we do a different design in that corn maze and this year we choose to work with the CFR (Canadian Finals Rodeo) that’s coming to Red Deer this year. We approached them this time, because our family really loves the rodeo, and we were really excited that it was moving to Red Deer and for us to be in the centre of Edmonton and Calgary… I think it’s a good partnership to get people to visit our farm, and to help the CFR get established here.”

Kraay says what makes their corn maze extra special, is the pattern is cut out without the use of GPS.

“We just plant our corn in rows, but we plant it in two directions, so essentially it becomes a big grid, and we basically take the picture of the maze we have on grid paper, and then we paint it on the corn, and then someone follows behind with the rototiller and cuts out the path. So we do it when it’s about 3-4 inches tall.”

The Kraay family farms opens their door for the 2018 season this Friday, July 20th, and the CFR will make its debut in Red deer on October 30th at the Enmax Centrium.
