The final keynote speaker for the Alberta Student Leadership Conference at LCHS was so moving that student broke out into a spontaneous singing of our national anthem shortly after her speech concluded.

Former professional curler and Olympic athlete Cheryl Bernard was the speaker who inspired the students, after telling them a story about what happened after they lost to Sweden in the gold medal game in Vancouver in 2010.

Bernard and her team were at Tim Horton's following their silver medal win, when the girl serving her recognized them, and began singing O Canada. Fellow restaurant patrons followed her lead, and soon Bernard and her team were being serenaded by the entire restaurant.

It was a touching moment for her and her team, which is why shortly after she finished her speech, the students decided to honor her by doing the same.

Bernard was invited as a guest speaker to talk about her leadership skills, team work, and how to bounce back after a tough loss. She talked about a way she looks at losses that make them seem more like an opportunity rather than a defeat.

"I really am a big believer in perspective, and learning from losses. I told them the one quote, I said when I competed I had it on my mirror for years, and it said 'I never lose, I either win or I learn'. And I honestly think that if you can approach life that way, and don't have everything built around being an athlete or winning, have it around the experience and the journey, the journey is pretty incredible."

Bernard stayed after her speech to take photos and sign autographs for the students, including one student who insisted that the autograph was for her grandmother.
