After nearly two years in the making, complete with public consultation and reviews, an updated Intermunicipal Development Plan was adopted between the Lacombe County and the City of Lacombe yesterday.

The new plan details how the two municipalities will work together going forward, on things like road use and construction, trail systems, green spaces, and future school locations.

Jennifer Kirchner, Planner with the City of Lacombe says it's all about working together for a better future for all.

“With an IDP, you are planning beyond just your community, you are working with your neighbour to ensure that, when the City has something positive happen, or an application comes forward, we can see how it best fits the County as well, and vice versa.”

This is a new mandate through the Provincial Municipal Government Act, which will require all municipalities to eventually collaborate with neighbouring municipalities.

Paula Law, Reeve for Lacombe County says they are confident this will help grow the region collaboratively as both areas explore future opportunities.

“With this plan in place, the City and the County have a broad, mutually beneficial land use plan that provides a framework for long-term growth and development.”
