The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Red Deer celebrated its second expansion in two years with a new cold storage facility.

The new facility was completely donated by members of the community and contained $100,000 worth of donated building materials.

Red Deer ReStore accepts donations of new and gently used building materials that are resold for a fraction of their retail price.

The new building will allow inventory that was currently kept in the yard to be moved inside to allow for a more comfortable shopping experience.

Executive Director for Habitat Red Deer Brian Brake says the donations have helped divert waste from the landfills.

“They estimate that will all the stuff that’s been dropped off, it’s the equivalent of 500 tones that would have gone to the landfill. It came here because they were still things that were in working condition or had some value. We sold them, now someone else is using them. It’s a wonderful way to recycle things.”

Brake adds all the proceeds from the ReStore help fund home build projects like the ones currently going on in Sheep Close of Lacombe and possibly future projects in Stettler.
