The community came out in bunches this weekend in Sylvan Lake for the Grand Opening of their new NexSource Centre.

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place Friday night, but the place was rocking right through until Sunday.

There was something for everyone at the new multiplex including free public swimming and skating along with a family fun festival.

Lauralei Metcalfe brought her daughters and niece on Saturday and said it means so much to the community.

“We’ve been waiting for this for years so it will be good. Something for them (kids) to do, instead of having to leave to go to Blackfalds or go to Red Deer. It’s a big deal.”

The new centre includes a five-sheet curling rink, a swimming pool, exercise rooms and a running track.

Dignitaries from around the area gathered to celebrate, including Sylvan Lake mayor Sean McIntyre.

“To see it all come together is so incredible. I’m so proud of the community members and what they were able to accomplish now for something that will affect our community for generations,” said McIntrye.

“This is such a happy day and I’m so happy to be here for it.”

Sylvan Lake minor hockey and figure skating along with fitness boot camps also highlighted the event.
