About 70 projects filled the gym at Lacombe Junior High Wednesday evening, as they hosted their 2nd annual Heritage Fair, where grade 7 students presented some interesting and cool facts about Canada and our heritage, using a topic of their own choosing, as well as their unique perspectives.

12-year-old Ryder Wyatt focused his attention on the contributions Canada has made to the space program.

“Without the contributions of the Canadian Space Agency, NASA wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far. For instance, the Space Vision system, we use TV camera sensors to help astronauts see in the extreme light and dark of space. None of NASA’s astronauts would have been able to see anything out on their space walks.”

For fellow grade 7 student Chloe Ramsay, she had to look no further than her mother for inspiration about her families Ukrainian heritage, which she was proud to display to her fellow students.

“Why did Ukrainians come here, I wanted to figure it out, because my heritage is Ukrainian, and I wanted to make pierogis to share with everybody. I learned that in our history, Ukrainians were only welcomed to Canada because they were good farmers, and they could farm our prairie lands and our agricultural durable lands.”

The Heritage Fair is a nationwide challenge opens to grade, 7, 8, and 9, with the winners heading to the regional competition in Calgary, with the winners of that going to the finals in Ottawa later this year.
