Lacombe County made it easier for you to feel safe planting your second home on the ice over the winter, now it's time to take it off.

With the end of winter fishing season ending on March 31, they are making sure owners of ice shacks have plenty of time to take them off the lake.

The County encouraged owners to register their shacks at the beginning of the season, in case they get left behind this year.

Environmental Coordinator, Jennifer Berry says it also makes sure pollution stays out of the water, whether intentional or not.

“We found last year a lot of people waited too late to get their huts off the ice and then they were having a really hard time getting them off.”

Berry says they have had people abandon their shacks on the ice before, and it's much harder to get them off once the ice starts to melt.

“I haven’t heard any complaints yet, but we are getting a little closer to when fishing closes on the 31.”
