With the front doors officially opened full use of the Gary Moe Sportsplex for both sports fans and teams are in full swing.

So far many seem to be enjoying the newly renovated facility according to Engineering Services Manager, Jordan Thompson.

With phase one and two complete some minor details will be finished over the next two to three weeks including signage instillation and minor touchups.

Thompson said phase three will begin in the summer and will primarily include widening the hallway in the facility.

“Scott Builders, our general contractor for the work, will come back around mid-April and they’ll set up their crews to approximately double the width of the existing hallway in Barnett one.”

Thompson explained they're working to make sure the Lacrosse teams won't be affected by the changes and will have the change rooms available to meet their scheduling needs.

You may have also noticed the new artwork which is part of the one per cent for Art Policy, something Thompson said was established by council and allocates one per cent of the construction budget towards artwork.

“Larry Hunter, the artist that was selected, did the work on the exterior of the facility and he did the mural inside. Also the lit hockey player, curling player and the swimmer inside with all of the signatures, he did that too,” Thompson said.

“It really brings the community together and brings support for a project like this.”

So far sponsorship and donated funds total just over $600 000, with continued requests for donations taking place once the Donor Wall construction is complete.
