Based on feedback from residents, some further changes have been made to a new Visitor Pay Parking Program which launched last week in Sylvan Lake.

One of the big changes, according to Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet, deals with the number of vehicles a home can have registered to be exempt from paying for parking.

“Previously we had only allowed up to two registered vehicles per residence, so based on some of the feedback we’ve increased the two registered vehicles to now four registered vehicles per residence. So again you still do have to prove residency”.

Gaudet says the Town has also tweaked resident exemptions when it comes to parking downtown.

“Previously we had a downtown resident only zone, so you literally had to be a resident within that zone being able to park on the street in that zone, so something similar to a university or hospital area. The change expands that so now any and all Sylvan Lake residents, so long as they are registered with the pay parking program, can now park in the downtown on any street in that zone”.

The Town has also exempted all handicapped stalls from the program.

The Visitor Pay Parking Program is being implemented to raise revenue to help the Town increase park maintenance in the resort community.

Visitors to Sylvan Lake looking to park in key lakefront locations where the new pay parking program is in effect will need to fork over $2/hour or $10 a day, with the option of an annual parking pass for $126.50.

A number of free parking lots remain available within 2 blocks of the Lakeshore.
