A nice boost for public transit in Red Deer as the Federal Minister of Infrastructure visited the city on Saturday.

The feds and provincial government teamed up to announce more than 270 milllion dollars for 52 new transit projects across the province.

Red Deer's share is just over 13 million dollars in funding to make transit more accessible.

The money will be used on 6 projects that include accessibility upgrades at bus stops, replacing some conventional transit buses and system intelligence enhancements.

Mayor Tara Veer says "As in all major cities in Alberta, Red Deer has many citizens and families who face financial challenges in meeting their daily needs, and affordable transportation provides the opportunity for low income citizens and families to access employment and education opportunities as well as important community and government resources".

Nearly $600,000 was also earmarked for Red Deer County to purchase buses and install bus stops and shelters.
