11 affordable housing properties in Red Deer will be getting some much needed renovations thanks to funding from the Federal and Provincial Governments.

In total, $800,000 will be going into the 11 properties for low income families and seniors, to replace aging windows, doors, and water heaters.

Minister of Seniors and Housing Lori Sigurdson says there's still more that can be done, but this is a great start.

"New furnaces, hot water tanks, various things to support them so they have a well maintained property. So this investment is really important, and of course it creates jobs locally, supports people working in other regions across Alberta, and Red Deer specifically."

The Federal Goverment will be contributing $500,000, while the Province will contribute the other $300,000.

Sigurdson says the money will be used to improve affordable housing units for Red Deer's low income earners.

"It will help folks who've been struggling and are earning low wages, as well as seniors. So people are needing some supports, and we'll make sure their facilities are getting the things they need."

11 currently occupied units will now be renovated thanks to the funding, but the housing authority will also be able to repair 13 other units, which will then be put up for rent.
