Roads are expected to be slick in the morning as a freezing rain warning has been issued for much of central Alberta. Through the evening, snow is also expected to fall and drivers are asked to remain cautious on their commute for January 22, 2020.

A freezing rain warning was issued at 3:33 PM MST Tuesday 21 January 2020

The warning is in effect for:

  • City of Red Deer
  • County. of Stettler: Stettler, Donalda
  • Lacombe County: Clive, Alix, Mirror, Eckville, Lacombe, Blackfalds, and Bentley
  • Ponoka County: Ponoka and Maskwacis
  • Red Deer County: Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Penhold, Innisfail,  Bowden, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Prov. Park, Sylvan Lake, and Stephansson House

Freezing rain is expected or occurring. Freezing rain is expected to develop this evening from Red Deer to Drumheller, and then spread eastwards through Hanna and Coronation overnight. After the freezing rain, 5-10 cm of snow is expected to fall on top of the ice-covered surfaces.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
