March marks the month where fraud is on the minds of many.

Fraud Prevention Month focuses on helping Canadians recognize, reject and report fraud.

Police advise citizens to be extra cautious about suspicious calls and emails asking for personal information.

Colin Verbisky, Police Support Team Leader with the Lacombe Police Service, said fraud can happen to anybody, no matter where you live.

“Lacombe is not immune to any type of fraud,” said Verbisky.

“I mean we have a great community here, but unfortunately the majority of frauds are coming from outside of our community whether it’s international calls that are being received by our citizens or in the mail.”

Verbisky adds something that people can do to prevent fraud is to stay up to date with their financial records, so if something like identity theft happens, you’ll know right away.

“We always remind people and recommend that people keep track of all their bank account statements, watch them very closely and make sure you do your credit reports on yourself as well, to make sure someone isn’t stealing (from you),” said Verbisky.
