A former Lindsay Thurber High School student from Red Deer was one of 6 Alberta volunteers honoured with a Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award yesteday.

The awards recognize volunteers whose efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community and fellow community members.

Poshika Dhingra has organized schoolwide clothing drives to provide winter clothing for Syrian refugees, as well as fundraisers for United Way and Cystic Fibrosis.

She volunteers her time with the City of Red Deer's Greater Downtown Committee, she's an Executive Member of the Youth Panel of the Indo Canadian Women's Association, and a spokesperson for the RCMP National Youth Advisory Committee.

Dhingra is in her 1st year of studies at the University of Alberta where she is involved in Science FUNdamentals, promoting science to elementary school kids, and she volunteers with VIDA, a university organization that helps provide better healthcare for citizens in impoverished countries.
