Thanks to a delicious burger put together by Cilantro and Chive, the Lacombe Fire Department was able to donate $792 dollars to the Legacy Place Society.

The Legacy Place Society is a place where first responders can go to and rest, whether that is physically or mentally.

This is all part of Cilantro and Chive's "Burger of the Month" campaign, which sees a different community group design a burger each month, with $2 from each going to a charity of that group’s choice.

The burger for April was known as "The Smoke Show", and it was a combination of beef, pork, and some added spice. In total they sold 396 of these speciality burgers.

The purpose Legacy Place is for first responders to be able to evaluate their mental or physical health privately.

Mark Sproule is a Board Member with Legacy Place Society, and also a Community Peace Officer, and he explains why a special place is needed for first responders who often deal with the worst case scenarios the general public rarely has to encounter.

"Quite often these first responders that are helping people on a day to day basis, they feel vulnerable accessing some of the same resources that are out there for the general public. So what happens in turn is, members will turn down resources when they need them. And it causes a situation which can cause depression, lead to different mental health disorders, lead to relational issues with spouses, and so Legacy Place is a safe home for members in police, firefighters, military, EMS, peace officers, 911 dispatchers, that they can access as a resource."

The Legacy Place Society has houses in Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton, all of which are completely confidential.

For the month of May, the Central Alberta Buccaneers will be taking over with their burger, known as "Blackbeard’s Delight", with the money raised from the sale of that burger going to the Women's Outreach Center in Red Deer.
