The Central Alberta Film Festival, which takes place at Festival Hall this year from October 14th-17th, has announced its 2020 film selections, with 19 films in total selected.

“We want people to know that these films are fun for the average audience. People don’t have to be intimidated. It’s a night out at the movies,” says Heather Thiessen, Head of Submissions for CAFF.

“I’ve encountered people who say they don’t know what to expect from the festival. They ask questions like ‘Will it be too fancy for me?’ or ‘Am I going to understand what’s happening on screen?’ This is just a great safe activity to help people get out of the house and see some great films,” says Tanya Mullakady, Communications Director for CAFF.

Most of the films this year were made in Canada, including many from Alberta.

John, 316

A feature-length film from Edmonton, tells the story of a psychiatric hospital turned upside down by a mysterious drifter.

Finch

A short film about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship was submitted from Calgary.

Guardians of the Grasslands

A film from Bashaw, this is a short documentary that is the result of a collaboration between dedicated conservationists and local ranchers, which seeks to showcase how cattle continue to create hope on what’s left of Canada’s native grasslands.

“The awards show after the screenings on October 17 is fancy in that it’s a chance to dress up and be glamourous, but it’s a good time for everyone,” says Mullakady.
