This week we celebrate National Volunteers Week, a time when we thank those in our community who take the time out of their busy lives to help others, all out of the goodness of their hearts.

Tuesday night at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, the Lacombe Family and Community Support Services held their annual volunteer appreciation night, a night full of songs, food, games, laughter and celebration.

The night kicked off with a thank you speech from Mayor Steve Christie, quickly followed by songs and games that got the entire audience on their feet to play along.

Coordinator for the FCSS Jan Pocock says volunteers are a central part of their organization, as well as organizations around the world.
“We would be, just a boring old office without our volunteers. Our volunteers are the people who go out and do all the programs that we have. There are Meals on Wheels volunteers, there are Lifeline volunteers, there are Tools for Schools volunteers, there the people who get things done. I honestly believe that without our volunteers nothing would get done. These are the people who let our kids play sports, these are the people who make our school special, these are the people who run our churches, these are the people who run all these amazing organizations.”

According to stats based on tax returns, Lacombe had the most volunteers out of any community in Alberta. Last year, the FCSS alone had over 400 volunteers total, ranging in ages from 90 down to just 4 years old.
