Many students and faculty at Father Lacombe Elementary school stood up to bullying this morning, sending a message with the colour pink.

It's a day that was started in Canada but has since spread world-wide. Pink Shirt day promotes healthy relationships, encourages kindness and sends a message that bullying whether it's done online or in person, will not be tolerated.

Teacher Tammy Bessette said being kind to one another is something the school tries to promote.

“We have a kind club and we try and promote kind messages. We are trying to get that message out that we need to stand up to bullying and when we see it happening stop it.”

“I think the biggest message this morning was that you’re not alone if it is happening and speak up.”

According to Alberta Human Services 50 per cent of students in the province have reported being bullied at school and 45 per cent of Canadians have reported being bullied at work.

To participate in pink shirt day all you have to do is wear a pink shirt and share it by tweeting a photo using the #StandUp and #PinkShirtDay hashtag.
