Have you forgotten to renew your registration since the province stopped mailing out reminders?

It doesn't matter if it's a day or a month late, it's a $310 fine for not having your vehicle registration up to date.

Recent stats from Alberta Justice show that tickets for the offence jumped 40 per cent since the government stopped sending reminders through the postal service in April of 2016. That translates into about 22 thousand infractions.

Sgt. Kevin Halwa from the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit says staying on top of your renewals is part of owning a vehicle.

“Excuses are a dime a dozen, no matter if it’s for no registration, or for speeding, or for not wearing your seat belt or using your cell phone. People always have excuses, but the fact of the matter is, if you got a driver’s license that means you’re a big boy or girl and have to be on top of your paperwork.”

Halwa says even though the weather is mild right now for this time of year, RCMP members are out in full force.

“Traffic wise I think we’ve had it lucky so far with the fairly decent weather, I’m sure that’ll come to an end sooner or later. But we are getting into our check stop campaign season, members of the public can expect to see us out there checking for impaired drivers, and doing our part to make sure everyone gets home safe.”

Drivers do have the option to sign up for email reminders through My Alberta E Services.
