Despite the weather, this is still one of the most exciting times of the year for kids, and you can guarantee they will still be out in droves in search of some treats and Halloween fun.

Lacombe Police Constable Jeff Hewitt says they will have increased patrols tonight, just working to ensure it's a safe night for everyone.

“Just making sure that drivers do slow down especially in areas of town where there are more kids trick or treating, so we will just be out making sure people are driving correctly.  And if kids are maybe jaywalking or not paying attention we may just sit and have a little educational talk with them”.

He’s also asking parents to help ensure kids are visible.

“It’s that one time of year where there’s actually more pedestrians so foot traffic than cars out on the road, so just make sure you are seen, if you have a dark costume maybe carry a flashlight or they have those cool little pumpkin trick or treat lanterns that you can carry, so just something like that so you can be seen”.

While it's an exciting night for young families, Halloween is not everybody's cup of tea.

Hewitt asks that you make an effort to make it easy for kids to determine whether or not your household is participating in trick or treating tonight.

“Just make sure your home is well lit, so turn on any outside lights and then if you are not planning on handing out candy, just make sure your lights are turned off.  The other thing too is kids will look, maybe you don’t have the outside lights, but they will see your front lobby or your front window, living room if it’s in the front of the house there, so if you are planning on not handing out candy, maybe just try and watch TV in a different room, just so it is dark or pull the blinds”.

When all is said and done, and your night draws to a close Hewitt says it a great last step to take a quick minute with those treat bags before your kids indulge.

“Just make sure if you see any packages that are open, chances are they have enough candy already, you can just throw a couple of them out, anything that looks like it’s been tampered with or its open, just throw out”.

Lacombe Police Service is wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween.
