When Sylvan Lake's Advanced Ambulatory Care Centre opens its doors in June it will be outfitted with some medical equipment of significant value and lifespan that will enhance the services they are able to provide, all thanks to the efforts of the Sylvan Lake Urgent Care Committee.

For the last 6-7 years that group has been fundraising for equipment, they've raised over $250,000, which doesn't include a number of large donations earmarked for specific equipment.

Committee Chair Susan Samson says Alberta Health Services is responsible for outfitting the centre with all of the basic equipment, but they've been working with the Doctor's that will be running the centre and are able to answer some of their equipment wish lists that will really benefit patient care.

She uses the example of a defibrillator they'll be able to purchase thanks to a recent $35,000 donation from Red Deer County.

“We’re expecting to treat patients with non-life threatening injuries, but that’s not to say that someone could walk in there who is having a heart attack and in the meantime those Doctors will be expected to stabilize that patient until they can be transported to the emergency room”.

When asked if their work ends after the centre opens, Samson says there's more to be done.

“We will continue to operate as a committee and continue to raise funds definitely for 2018 and maybe beyond that into the future because in the business of healthcare there is always equipment that could be added to the existing amount of equipment that is over there”.

Some other donations that will expand the offering of care at the centre include $18,000 from the Town of Eckville's Hospital Memorial Fund for an ECG machine and an $1800 donation from the Red Deer Elks for a fetal monitor.

The Urgent Care Committee will be hosting their 4th annual fundraising golf tournament August 10th.
