The town of Blackfalds is one of the fastest growing places in Canada, and their residents are busy preparing for that future by raising funds to help twin their ice rink.

The Duel Ice Development Society, or D.I.D.S, is busy raising money to help build a second indoor ice surface.

President of D.I.D.S Karen Sernecky says the town is going to pay for most of the expansion, with their group helping to pay for the items that'll take the new ice surface to the next level.

“We’re fundraising for the stadium seating, the oversized locker rooms, things like that. So all the extra enmities we are hoping to be able to help the town put those into the building, cause we desperately need another arena surface for a lot of things...more opportunities for the community in aspects like sporting events people want to see here in our town, concerts, things like that. ”

Sernecky says they are planning to make this an annual event, as they have a lot of ideas for the new ice surface that will need to be paid for.

“Our goal is to raise a million dollars. We are hoping to go above and beyond that so we can add in extra things. One thing that has been suggested recently is live games [online], so that parents that aren’t able to watch their kids play sports they can actually go on to the live game feed and watch your kid from wherever they are.”

D.I.D.S will be hosting a Raise the Rink event on Saturday, April 6th, with a live and silent auction, DJ, and special guest, 4-time gold medal winner Hayley Wickenheiser will also be making a speech.
