This Saturday at Boston Pizza here in Lacombe, members of our local police force as well as local special Olympians will be on hand for their annual Cops, Pops, and Pizza event.

This is where members of our LPS and local special Olympians help serve customers, but as Lacombe Police School Resource Officer Cst. Jeff Hewitt explains, they'll be assisting the regular servers, and instead of tips, they are looking for donations.

“There still will be servers working, so definitely tip them…but if you have any money left over we just ask for a tip or donation. So you can put it in an envelope, we’ll also have a debit machine there so you can put a donation towards the Special Olympics, and then all that money will go towards the Special Olympics here in central Alberta.”

Hewitt says the kind of people helping with this event has expanded from just police officers in some communities.

“So this is set up through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, so as law enforcement officers we help plan different events that raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics. Some of the smaller communities we don’t have a ton of law enforcement so first responders have kind of jumped on board, so we’ve seen firefighters, paramedics and stuff started to help out, so it’s a really good cause.”

The event takes place on Saturday from 4 pm until 8 pm at the Lacombe Boston Pizza, where emergency services members, as well as Special Olympians will be taking orders and delivering food.
